Step-by-Step Process for Installing Your Custom Canopy

December 3, 2024

You may be looking for a new canopy for your home or business. A canopy is an excellent way to add character to a building, provide shelter from the sun and rain, or add appeal to your business.

While you may like the idea of a new canopy, you may not like the idea of finding a canopy whose design matches your location. You may also be worried about a lengthy or difficult installation process that could increase costs and man hours.

Don’t worry, here we have outlined step-by-step each of the things that you can expect from our custom canopy installations. These include a brief description of the different types of canopies we offer and an outline of what a typical installation process will look like.

What are SKYSCAPE Canopies?

Here at SKYSCAPE® Architectural Canopies, we work on producing high-quality aluminum canopy systems. These systems are designed with you the consumer in mind. The entire process from design, to production, to installation is designed to make it as easy as possible for you to install your dream canopy.

So you might be wondering what types of products we offer here at SKYSCAPE®. We offer a variety of predesigned canopy builds as well as the option to develop custom builds based on your needs. With dozens of options available to order you can be sure that you are getting a distinctive canopy that will make the intended installation location really pop.

So, are there any differences between a canopy and an awning or are they the same? Within the custom canopy installation industry there is little distinction between these two terms. You may likely hear the same design called 2 different things simply based on where someone is from.

The biggest difference between a canopy and an awning comes in the form of its design. An awning tends to have a slope or pitched design. The design also tends to be made with a mix of fabric and metal components. A canopy on the other hand is much flatter in design and is primarily made with metal.

SKYSCAPE® offers a variety of canopy builds with different looks so that you can pick your ideal design. No matter which design you settle on you can be sure that are getting the same things with every order. A fully-welded canopy make with extruded aluminum components. The canopy will be covered with a protective in-house paint job and be competitively priced against anything else on the market today.

How can you Install a Custom Canopy?

You have ordered a canopy, now what? While you might be daunted by the idea of installing your own canopy, are you ready for a dirty little secret? A good chunk of the cost for custom canopy installations comes from the manpower needed to install it. Installing your canopy is quicker and cheaper overall.

At SKYSCAPE® we are focused on providing the best customer service possible to you. This means that we want to ensure that we get the highest quality products to you, and that the headaches around installation plans don’t arrive in the mail with your canopy.

We offer a limited canopy installation service through Awnings Above based out of Atlanta, Georgia. However, we realize that many of our customers live outside of this area, and want to simplify the canopy installation process as much as possible for them. For that reason, here are some easy steps that you can take to ensure your custom canopy installation goes off without a hitch.

First, you will need to check and make sure you have all the necessary pieces, including accessories like wall plates and hanging rods, before beginning the installation. Don’t install the canopy by yourself. Have 2-4 people on hand to move pieces and hold them before they are secured to your building.

Remember that the canopy will weigh several hundred pounds after installation. Before installation, especially if you are purchasing a custom design, make sure to check with an architect that the front of your building can support the additional weight. With these general tips out of the way, here is an outline of the steps of the installation process.

  1. Install the wall plates into the exterior wall. These plates should be placed so that after the hanger rods are installed the canopy hangs at your desired height.
  2. Install the canopy frame at your desired height using screws to secure it below the wall plates. While the frame is not very heavy by itself, it may be long and unwieldy so make sure to have someone help you lift it into place.
  3. Line the gap between the frame and the building with caulk or some other filler to prevent water from leaking in.
  4. Attach the hanger rods to the wall plates and the outside edge of the canopy.
  5. Begin installing the shingles on the left end. Shingles should be slid into the frame one at a time. Secure each shingle with screws.
  6. When you get to the second to last shingle, slide it all the way to the right before adding the final shingle to the remaining slot. Ensure each shingle is secure and locked into place without any gaps.
